Former Calgary teacher Neil Bantleman has turned himself back in to officials in Indonesia.
The Supreme Court there overturned his acquittal on child sexual abuse charges Thursday, and bumped his sentence up by one year to eleven.
His wife, Tracy Bantleman spoke with media, including Reuters.
“What has happened is inhumane, ridiculous and absurd,” she said, fighting back tears. “And I can only pray and hope that the people in charge of this judicial review do honour to the country of Indonesia, and make a professional, careful consideration.”
The Bantleman family plans to appeal the latest ruling, a process which could take up to nine months.
Foreign Affairs Minister Stephan Dion says Canada will continue to fight for Bantleman and officials here believe the case against him was marred with inaccuracies.
