Will Trudeau convince premiers to get on board with a carbon tax?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Will the prime minister gain any traction for his carbon tax plan as he meets with provincial leaders in Vancouver?

A number of premiers feel there are other options that would be more effective.

Nova Scotia, like our province, has heavily invested in Hydro power. So, that province’s premier Stephen McNeil says there are other measures that can be taken than a carbon tax.

“I don’t think anyone has done enough,” says McNeil. “But I think what we need to do is recognize that there is more than one way to deal with the carbon issue. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a tax. It can be investments in a transmission system that allows us to capitalize on the renewable sources that we have.”

Cap and trade, not a carbon tax, is what’s working for Manitoba, says that province’s premier Greg Selinger.

So he’s hoping the prime minister and his counterparts keep an open mind about all green options.

“We’re doing cap-and-trade,” says Selinger. “That’s our preference, and a stewardship model — which is our preference. Other jurisdictions have other approaches. The point I’m making is however you do it, we got to get there together, on the jobs, and on the targets for the emissions.”

Today’s meeting will establish four working groups to investigate potential policies to address climate and environmental concerns.
