There’s a new addition at the Calgary Zoo.
Fifteen-year-old resident Kioja gave birth Wednesday night to the first newborn gorilla at the zoo since 2008.
The father is 37-year-old gorilla, Kakinga.
Currently, the animal care team is watching for signs of nursing and bonding between mom and baby.
Spokesperson Trish Exton-Parder says they don’t yet know the gender of the new bundle of joy.
“That usually doesn’t happen until the vets determine they need to do their first health check, and that’s a little ways a way. It’s really respectful right now, just to let the gorillas have their time, and we’ll intervene and get a little health check in there when everybody seems to be comfortable with that,” she said.
The TransAlta Rainforest building will remain closed for the day.
Exton-Parder says the public could get a glimpse of the baby gorilla as soon as Friday; it all depends on how the animals seem to be faring.
