City gets head start on street sweeping

The city says an unusually warm winter is saving them money and helping the environment.

A lack of snow has allowed crews to get a leg up on street sweeping.

General Manager of Transportation Mac Logan says as of Friday, they’ve already covered 3,000 kilometres, or 21 per cent of Calgary roadways.

“From an environmental point of view, we’re keeping a lot of material out the storm sewers. So, it doesn’t go into the river, it doesn’t go into our ponds and fill up our ponds. We’re getting to that before the wet spring weather that is typical in Calgary. Maybe not this year, but let’s hope,” he said.

He says the early start will also mean fewer night shifts.

The regular spring clean season begins April 3.

“I imagine that we will get our spring clean-up done much sooner, as soon as we’ve ever done it, barring any real severe weather,” Logan said.
