Bill 202 catches landlords off guard

They didn’t know it was coming until the bill was introduced in the legislature.

Some landlord groups have been caught off guard by proposed legislation that would set up an affordable housing committee in Alberta to make recommendations on everything from security deposits to rent subsidies and affordability.

Gerry Baxter with the Calgary Residential Rental Association tells 660 NEWS, he’s glad the NDP wants to consult and not just go ahead with unilaterally arbitrary action.

“Hopefully at the end of this discussion, if it turns out to be productive, which I’m very hopeful that it will, who knows, maybe we come up with something even better than we have,” he said.

Baxter says the rental market in Calgary has made a rapid turn and now favours tenants.

All the layoffs have hurt landlords who relied on contracts with oil and gas companies who leased high end properties for employees.
