Charges for Riverfront Aquariums owner and manager

The former owner and a manager of Riverfront Aquariums have been charged, after more than 300 animals and insects were seized in December.

The Calgary Humane Society says there was a blatant disregard for the basic welfare of the animals, which included several species of snakes, lizards and amphibians.

“In this case we we’re dealing with multiple issues from lack of water, dirty water, dirty enclosures, overcrowding (and) lack of basic medical care,” said Senior Manager of Animal Cruelty Investigations Brad Nichols.

He says the former manager, Wayne Woo, was already facing separate charges for three previous offences. He and owner Michael Chow will be in court on Thursday.

There is a potential fine of $20,000 for each neglected animal, as well as a prohibition for owning or caring for animals for up to a lifetime.
