Baby gorilla struggling at Calgary Zoo

A newborn gorilla is not doing so well at the Calgary Zoo.

The newborn is smaller than she should be at 13 days old, and is still not gaining weight as she should.

Head veterinarian Dr. Sandie Black said the infant’s status is day to day.

“So, we’ve had a very close eye on her a few days in,” Black explained. “On Sunday the 13th, we did intervene. The baby was a bit dehydrated and continued to be weak. So, we did immobilize her mom and take the baby for a full exam.”

While staff stepped in just after the baby was born to feed her and give her a boost they say they will only do that again if it’s absolutely necessary.

“Right now, baby is a lot stronger. She gripping better with her hands, moving her legs more, nursing is more regular. We’re seeing milk at the nipple when she comes off and she’s starting to fill out a little bit. She still looks pretty spidery.”

Her nursing initially was a bit weak, which is probably why things have been slow. But, as I said, this baby continues to get a little bit stronger, put on a little bit of weight.”

For now, they’re leaving the tot with her mother, Kioja, and the rest of the troupe saying that’s the best place for her right now.
