Working at home with the kids?

The idea of working at home to be there for your kids sounds like a good plan if you can make it happen.

But one expert says it can be a recipe for disaster if you don’t have the right harmony.

Ellen Percival with Calgary’s Child Magazine recommends setting up a kid-friendly zone nearby to keep them as occupied as possible and creating and sticking to a schedule.

However, she says you may still have to rely on some childcare to make it all happen.

“You know, that can be a sliding scale depending on what’s going on with your children. If you walk them to school every morning or they come home for lunch or you have childcare for some days, obviously you’re going to gear your schedule around that. Alternately, if there are times you have to go out and take meetings or meet with people, you’re going to have a schedule that allows for some childcare,” says Percival.

Percival also suggests you consider working off-hours, early in the morning or late at night, depending on what works best for you, which will free up other time during the day.

Another tip? She recommends giving yourself permission to change your game plan around as you need to so you will have have less stress.
