Calgary band up for first ever JUNO

Calgary band AM Static is up for its first ever JUNO, in the category of Electronic Album of the Year for ‘A Life Well Lived.’

AM Static, comprised of Chris Austman and Nils Mikkelsen, formed back in late 2011 after meeting while working at a music store.

“We just had an instant connection off the bat for writing,” Mikkelsen said.

They describe their music as eclectic electronic meets pop.

“We’re both big Joni Mitchell fans, we’re both big Paul Simon fans, but our music tends to live in — we try to take a healthy dose of inspiration from both the great electronic producers but also just good songwriters,” says AM Static.

They say it’s a big accomplishment to be nominated for a JUNO, especially considering how the album was made.

“A lot of it is very DIY, and this project was DIY, so to be nominated for a JUNO that was largely made in my living room and then mixed in my bedroom,” Austman explained.

The pair is still a bit shocked, but say it’s pretty fantastic to be nominated for their first ever JUNO.
