The US ambassador to Canada is positive about the future relationship between the two countries, and hopeful that they can work through economic problems.
Bruce Heyman tells 660 News that this won’t change, no matter who gets elected in November.
“Regardless of who becomes president in this next election cycle, Canada is just too important to the United States. Our largest trading partner in goods and services, over $670 billion last year. We just need to first, say thank you and appreciate it, but also get to work.”
He also believes the relationship between Canada and the US has improved, ever since Justin Trudeau was elected last November.
“The working relationship we have with the government of Canada has never been better,” Heyman says. “We’ve worked over the last several months, very closely, with the Prime Minister and his team and all of the ministers, focusing on the things that are important for both of us.”
But most importantly, the countries need to continue to collaborate.
“I have said, since my arrival here,” Heyman continues. “A strong Canada is in the US best interest, a strong America is in Canada’s best interest, but what’s best of all is when we’re strong together. So we have to look for opportunities where we can do business. Neither of us can control the global market prices of commodities of all types.”
Heyman was speaking in Calgary on Monday, at the opening day of the First Robotics Competition Western Canada Regional.
