Zoo reopens gorilla enclosure to public

It’s easier to get a close up look of the baby gorilla at the Calgary Zoo.

Spokesperson Trish Exton-Parder said they’ve opened the enclosure fully for the first time since the little baby was born.

“We’ll still have barricades up inside just to avoid people getting too close or tapping on glass and that kind of thing. But absolutely, we’ve had some line-ups to get in and see the baby gorilla so now it will be a little bit easier to pulse people through and have everyone see our new addition,” she said.

There were some health concerns because the baby wasn’t growing fast enough, but Exton-Parder said things are heading in a positive direction.

“We’ve had to take it a day at a time because she’s a little tiny, and we want to make sure the troupe has all the time that they need to do the right bonding and to make sure everybody’s comfortable. They experimented for a wee bit on the weekend with the nice weather to see if the gorillas wanted to go outside and there was a bit of excitement there. Mama and baby went out for a wee bit of time,” said Exton-Parder.

She added mom has taken to the baby very well, and the entire family is a model of love.
