A man who admitted to killing 18-year-old Adam Cavanagh in Calgary back in 2007 has learned his fate.
The perpetrator, referred to only as “M.M.” because he was 17 at the time of the offence, has been sentenced to seven years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the case.
It’s been a long road for the victim’s father, Perry Cavanagh, who says they’ll always keep Adam’s memory alive.
“We’ll it’s birthdays and birthday cakes on the table and we have a little area in our house that’s dedicated to Adam so he’s always there with us,” says Perry.
“He’s still our son. But we’ll move on. We want to be grandparents so hopefully that’s the next celebration.”
M.M. gets the maximum sentence under the Youth Justice Act. Four years will be served in custody and the other three will be supervised in the community.
M.M. was originally sentenced for first-degree murder but the conviction was later overturned.
