Vancouver Island RCMP officer killed in crash

LANGFORD (NEWS 1130) – An RCMP officer is dead after a crash near Victoria early this morning.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. in Langford. Photos on social media show the driver’s side of the marked police cruiser completely crushed in. A full-sized pick-up truck was also involved.

The officer has been identified by West Shore RCMP as Constable Sarah Beckett. She has been described as a very popular member of the force with a big circle of friends and a loving family.

She was travelling east on Goldstream Avenue when the crash happened. Paramedics tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead just after 4 a.m.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital; his injuries are not serious. He is now in police custody.

Beckett had previously worked at the RCMP detachment in Port McNeill and with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the Beckett family.

The RCMP has also set up a webpage to collect condolences from across the country.
