The warm weather isn’t just bringing out the sun worshipers, it also has a lot of bears sniffing around after emerging from their winter dens.
So, to help prevent unfortunate close encounters, Alberta Parks and Wilderness is hosting Kananaskis Bear Day at the Canmore Nordic Centre Saturday, April 9.
It’s a chance for the whole family to learn how to enjoy the back country but avoid the hungry bruins.
Fish and Wildlife Officer Len Lupyczuk tells 660 NEWS, you should probably scratch river valleys off the destination list, for now.
“If you’re going to be travelling along river beds or along green spaces, those are going to be the areas bears will be looking for food. If you’re going to be hiking in those areas maybe pick spots where you can see long distances, not in close quarters. Stay out of the trees as much as possible,” he said.
The free open house will include demonstrations on how to use bear spray, as well as other safety tips.
It goes from 10 to 3 at the Canmore Nordic Centre Day Lodge.
