An underground tunnel may be included in the plans to run the Green Line LRT through the city centre.
The City of Calgary is expected to release information about its evaluation of the line’s downtown route on Monday. Green Line LRT President Jeff Binks says there’s already signs pointing to the underground route.
“Lips have been locked really tight however, there has been information towards the public that the city has been starting to set up in Olympic Plaza. And reading between the lines of (that) information it does seem to point toward the tunnel being the preferred option to get the Green Line through the downtown core,” says Binks.
Binks likes the idea, and says even though it’s the most expensive option, it’s definitely the best.
“It’s the option to set up the Green Line to be future-proof the best, has the least impact downtown and more importantly on Prince’s Island and the river pathways. And it will allow the system to handle Calgary as a city not just today, but 20, 30, 40 years into the future,” he says.
The city is speaking with the media Monday morning, to discuss its evaluation of the line’s possible route through the core.
