Man in hospital after falling into trench

Paramedics, fire crews and occupational health and safety officials were on scene in the northeast after a man fell into a large trench on the job.

Carol Henke, spokesperson for the Calgary Fire Department, says it happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday in the 1300 block of 33rd St. N.E.

“We received a call to 9-1-1 that a man (sic) was struck by a bucket that came loose from a track hoe that was doing excavation,” Henke said.

After being removed from the trench, EMS took the victim, believed to be in his 40’s, to Foothills hospital in serious, potentially life-threatening condition.

The approximately 12 foot deep trench had to be stabilized before the man could be brought out of it.
