The beautiful spring weather in Calgary is bringing more skateboarders to our streets and just like bicycles, where you can ride has its limits.
Sergeant Katrina O’Reilly with the Mountain Bike Unit tells CityNews, skateboards are not allowed on the cycle track.
“That is a designated travel path, specifically for bicycles,” she explained. “We created that so that bicycles, commuters, could have a quick way to get through the core on a highway. It is still designated as part of the roadway. As a result, pedestrians, skateboarders, etcetera cannot travel in that cycle track.”
It falls under the Highway Safety Act and if you’re caught riding your board on the track; you’ll get a $150 ticket.
Skateboarders can travel on regular sidewalks outside of downtown, unless designated otherwise. However, in the core, there are restrictions.
“9 Avenue to south of the river, 4 Street and then 9 Street SW and in those areas, unfortunately, just foot pedestrians can be on the sidewalks and you’re going to have to pick up your skateboard and walk,” O’Reilly said.
