Emergency shelter holding fundraiser as need spikes 300 per cent

The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter is hosting its 22nd Annual Turning Points Fundraising Gala this week.

The non-profit says this year is especially difficult for many Albertans struggling during the economic downturn.

Last year, the agency’s 24-hour Family Violence Helpline fielded more than 11,000 calls, up 300 per cent from 2014.

The gala includes a dinner, silent and live auctions, a fun raffle, and inspiring stories.

It takes place on Thursday at the Telus Convention Centre downtown.
