Marlborough home targeted by arson catches fire for fourth time

A home that’s been damaged by fire three times in the last month was the scene of yet another blaze Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to 32 Marbank Way N.E at about 5 a.m. This time, they found a fire in the basement and were able to knock it down quickly.

Battalion Chief Randy McRae tells 660 NEWS the joint police and fire department Arson Unit is on the case.

“It is under investigation. We did not see anybody around the property at the time of the fire this morning. However, we’re at the very early stages of the initial investigation here. Police are on scene and everybody’s busy trying to figure this thing out,” he says.

This marks the fourth fire at the home. Police believe an arsonist has set fire to the home in Marlborough three other times over the past month. They released a video of a person of interest recently.

Just before 11 p.m., on March 29, police found a fire in a garbage can that expanded to a fence in the alley near the home. Then, on April 1 a house fire happened at the back of the same house. On the night of April 5, a third fire was started at the same location as the second fire.

“We’ve been able to knock down each one of these fires fairly quickly so the house does remain standing, although it’s certainly damaged. There is scaffolding around the house so it appears it was being worked on but I’m not 100 per cent sure at what stage they were repairing it or if this was part of the investigation,” says McRae.

The total damage to the house was estimated at $170,000 before Sunday’s blaze.
