Slave Lake lends support to Fort McMurray, recalling 2011 disaster

It’s a situation that’s all too familiar.

Slave Lake’s mayor is promising to send what he can to Fort McMurray to help combat a devastating wildfire.

Almost five years ago, a blaze swept through Slave Lake, decimating much of the Northern Alberta city.

“You know, the support that we got from the province at the time was overwhelming,” Tyler Warman said.

Warman has had maybe 90 minutes sleep since things escalated in Fort McMurray.

He’s been happy to pay back some of the kindness Slave Lake received in its time of need.

“(Tuesday) afternoon as things took off, I put together a couple more trucks and a couple more crews and I came up with them,” Warman said. “So, we’ve got three trucks and nine guys and one of our sprinkler trailers up here and we’ve been fighting fire all night.”

Slave Lake lost over 300 homes, and 90 per cent of it has now been re-built.
