Provincial program helps give thousands of student’s summer jobs

Alberta has reached its goal of supplying almost 3,000 students with summer jobs.

This year, the government re-instated the Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) and committed $10 million to the project.

Labour Minister Christina Gray says, it was the right call to bring it back.

“We can continue to support community organizations, first nations, and municipalities in their work. We also extended that support this year for the first time ever to small businesses.”

She adds, this year, the province received more than 2,600 applications from employers across the province, but couldn’t meet all needs with just $10 million. They will now look into how to improve the program for next year.
