The first ever Farm Safety day took place at the Stampede Park on Thursday.
More than 700 students from southern Alberta got a hands-on experience about rural farming and getting them ready for when they eventually take the reins of their own farms.
Kristina Barnes Communications Manager for Western Events and Agriculture at the Calgary Stampede said subjects included everything from chemical handling to grain safety.
“Chemical safety and how to identify how you should handle things, what you shouldn’t ever drink and that applies to everyone. We had a rollover simulator to show them what would happen if a car rolled and someone wasn’t wearing a seat belt,” Barnes said.
Barnes said it’s important for kids to realize the dangers of working at a farm.
“We hear about those stories in the news where you know the kids were killed in the grain accidents so those kind of things, just to raise awareness they know there are dangers where they are living and will be working but certainly to really have these things hit home and have them realize it could happen to them and we don’t want it to happen to them.”
Barnes adds the response to the event was positive with some of the kids saying it was the “best field trip ever.”
