Five deaths on provincial highways during long weekend

RCMP report five people lost their lives on Alberta highways during last week’s long weekend in accidents, with one of those deaths involving an off-road vehicle.

Five other people declined to provide a breath sample.

There were also roughly 35 alcohol-related road side suspensions and the Integrated Traffic Unit reports roughly 22 cases of distracted driving.

Cpl. Laurel Scott said those numbers are down compared to last year, but that could be because a number of members have been working in Fort McMurray.

“We have a lot of members redeployed and so it has taken a few members possibly away from focusing on traffic duties,” she said. “As well, the long weekend saw lots of rain in different areas through the province, so that would be a bit of an inhibitor, whether it’s for the members being out conducting operations or for traffic volume.”

Scott said it serves as a reminder for people to be safe, as the Canada Day long weekend is only a little over a month away.
