Oilsands giant Cenovus is shutting down operations and evacuating their Pelican Lake facilities because of a nearby fire.
In a release, the Calgary company says the fire was found about 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon about one kilometre from the main Pelican Lake facility, which is about 300 kilometres north of Edmonton.
Cenovus says no facilities or infrastructure has been damaged and they are working with provincial authorities to ensure the safety of staff and operations.
Pelican Lake is a heavy oil operation that produced about 24-thousand barrels a day last year.
