Calgary’s Muslim community says the response they’ve been getting to help those in need during this holy month has been overwhelming.
They have never found so many of their own having to go without during Ramadan.
It’s particularly poignant given the hundreds of new Syrian refugees and Fort McMurray evacuees in the city.
Shafakat Ullah Syed with the Muslim Association of Calgary says they’ve been trying their best to coordinate with agencies like the City of Calgary, Red Cross, and local universities.
He says they’re working together in this function, in hopes of helping at a time where they are supposed to be reflecting.
“We also manage a food bank, which is called the We Care Food Bank, and we also manage a job bank, in fact, called the We Care Job Bank,” he said.
Syed says they remain focused in helping with accommodations and essentials, until newcomers at least get back on their feet.
