New high-rise opens in Eau Claire

After almost 20 years in the making, Calgary’s newest downtown office tower is open for all.

Cadillac Fairview’s Calgary City Centre at 215 2 Street SW held its grand opening Monday, with breathtaking views of the city among its 36 storeys and 853,000 square feet of space.

It’s currently 92 per cent filled, but the big question is for how long, especially with the current state of the economy and tons of office space open.

“This is a longer term vision,” explained senior vice-president of development, Niall Collins. “This isn’t a short three to five year vision. This is a decades vision and that’s why they’ve moved into a new building, to be able to have a building that can change and flexible with the needs of their company.”

Fifteen years of planning and design has gone into the block Calgary City Centre is on, plus another three years of construction.
