When Pride Week kicks off in Calgary this summer, one of our city’s most iconic sports venues will roll out the welcome mat.
On Thursday, Winsport unveiled Pride Slide 2016. Vice-President Kim Jones says the organization is a regular participant in the Calgary Pride Parade and says hosting a giant party on August 27 is in keeping with Winsport’s commitment to providing an environment that’s safe for everyone to play, train and compete.
“We know in order to offer that environment though, we have to develop a culture of respect and inclusion, and that doesn’t just happen. It takes a lot of work. And here at Winsport, we’re committed to doing that,” says Jones.
Openly-gay Australian bobsledder Simon Dunn works and trains at Winsport. He’s thrilled it has stepped up in support.
“I think it’s paramount in showing the community itself that LGBTQ athletes and people are welcomed. Not only welcomed, but valued members of our community,” he says.
Pride Slide features 810-foot water slide, on-site DJs and entertainment and a cocktail gardens. Tickets are available here.
