Legacy Trail closed in Canmore after multiple bear sightings

There’s warning from Alberta Wildlife Officials after some close encounters with grizzly bear.

A portion of Legacy Trail is closed, just west of the Travel Alberta office in Canmore, as the animal chows down.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife says there have been several sightings of the grizzly in the last few weeks.

They warned people on Thursday, then closed off the trail Friday afternoon when wildlife officers noticed it was eating some road kill.

Provincial Spokesperson Brendan Cox says people nearby should be carrying bear spray, keeping their pets on a leash, and take other precautions.

“Walk in a group and make noise as you go. This will alert any wildlife in the area to your presence and if they know people are nearby they’re much more likely to leave the area,”

Anyone caught inside the restricted trail could be fined.
