Furnace scams heating up in Calgary

There’s another warning from Calgary police, after reports of possibly fraudulent cases of aggressive furnace salespeople.

Investigators say they’re going door-to-door in the city’s east, claiming they’re building inspectors and they need to inspect furnaces or home owners could face fines.

Reports say the salespeople tell residents they’ve found problems with the furnace or hot water tank, and then aggressively try to sell new ones.

They’re reminding people to ask for identification and note real inspectors usually only visit homes for appointments and emergencies. If you are told your furnace does not meet safety codes and must be replaced, you can often check this information with The City of Calgary’s Technical Assistance Centre to make sure it is true.

People can report door-to-door salespeople without a license to 311. For information on building codes and how to protect yourself from contractor fraud, visit calgary.ca/myhome.
