One man is in custody following a church fire in the city’s southeast.
The Calgary Fire Department arrived at the corner of Olympic Way and 13 Avenue at around 3:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
“Fire crews arrived quickly and knocked it down, which was really good, as it basically limited the damage to the doorway and some smoke inside,” Calgary Fire spokesperson Carol Henke explained. “There was very minimal damage to the building.”
Police were also on scene to assist.
“There were also numerous witnesses in the area and were able to identify a subject,” Acting Duty Inspector Phil Hoetger said. “He was taken into custody and the arson unit is investigating.”
Hoetger added they will interview the man and check surveillance video and if any other suspects are pointed out by the witnesses, they will pursue it, but at this time there are not looking for anyone else.
