Review board hearing slated for Matthew de Grood

A unique review hearing is scheduled Tuesday for the man behind Calgary’s worst mass murder.
Matthew de Grood was found not criminally responsible after admitting to killing five university students in April 2014 at a Brentwood house party.
The NCR designation means de Grood was suffering a psychotic break at the time of the killings and he was placed into a psychiatric facility rather than a prison for the crimes.
Over the next two days, board hearings will review his progress and whether the 24-year old can be given more privileges, like supervised outings.
It’s unique in that hearings of this nature are usually done in a matter of hours or less, and that it’s being held at the Calgary Courthouse because of the interest in the case.
Usually the hearings are held in the hospital where the subject is being detained.
