200 fish found dead at Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo is sending their aquarium water out for testing after 200 fish wound up dead this week.
Trish Exton-Parder, media spokesperson for the Calgary Zoo, says they are working to find out the cause of death.
“It seems that it’s definitely not a system failure of any kind, it’s some kind of contaminate that somehow got into the water, so at the moment we have been able to clean everything out,” she explained. “Things are stable and we have the water sent out for testing for toxicology reports.”
Exton-Parder says most of the adult fish in the lower tanks in the TransAlta Rainforest have passed away.
But, she adds it won’t take long for the population to recuperate.
“They’re called Cichlids and are a tropical very common aquarium fish, with the adult population and those two pools being minimized they’re good breeders, so we certainly wouldn’t have any concern because the river edge pools are all connected so they’re able to re-populate again,” she said.
The Calgary Zoo noticed something was wrong on Friday when they lost a significant amount of fish, but since Saturday no other fish have died.
