Nine people without a home following duplex fire

A duplex fire has left a family of nine without a home.
Fire crews were called to a duplex on 30th Avenue near 36th Street S.E. around 5:45 p.m. Friday.
Due to the amount of smoke and flames, a second alarm was called.
Carol Henke, public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department, says the fire started in the basement.
“It is accidental in nature. There’s nothing suspicious about this fire,” she said.
Fire investigators remained on scene for a few hours afterwards, to determine the exact origin of the flames.
There were two adults and four children in the home at the time. None of them were injured in the incident.
Henke credits a working fire alarm for helping the family get out safely.
“We always like to hear that people have working smoke alarms, and that’s what they do. They let you know that there’s a problem,” she said. “Thankfully, the family got out without any serious injuries.”
She adds the family will most likely be able to return home, but not any time soon. However, they will be getting some help until then.
“Damage, especially to the basement is extensive, smoke damage throughout the home. Extensive repairs will have to be done,” she said. “Calgary Emergency Management Agency has been called to the scene to help assist with alternative arrangements. It’s a family of two adults and seven children in total, so they will need some assistance.”
