Report recommends changes to welfare system ‘overrepresented’ by Aboriginal children

Alberta’s watchdog has released the results of a review into how many Aboriginal kids are in the child welfare system.
The report, Voices for Change, includes eight recommendations identifying some systemic issues leading to widespread intervention.
They include, establishing equal partnerships between governments and Aboriginal communities, recognizing the right of indigenous families to have their own approaches to child rearing, and creating a multi-year action plan for change.
Irfan Sabir, Minister of Human Services, has responded to the report, saying the province accepts the recommendations and will work with the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate to implement them.
Richard Feehan, the Minister of Indigenous Relations, says it’s clear the status quo isn’t working and a clearer policy is necessary.
