Marmots welcomed into Calgary Zoo, 13 others released into the wild

The Calgary Zoo has four new Vancouver Island marmot pups — which is big news because the mammals are on the critically endangered list.

Doctor Axel Moehrenschlager at the Zoo says not only are the infants healthy, but they also released 13 other animals back into the wild.

“This is a uniquely Canadian species, a beautiful animal that lives in colonies on Vancouver Island. An animal that was almost extinct by 2004, there were fewer than 40 of them left in the wild.”

The release of the animal helps bolster the overall population of the species by five per cent.
