Man dies in rollover, driver facing impaired charges

It’s just the start of the long weekend in Alberta, and already RCMP are reporting a deadly crash allegedly fueled by alcohol.
Mounties were called to the community of Clive Alta., outside of Red Deer at around 12:45 a.m. on Friday.
Blackfalds Staff Sgt. Ken Morrison says three men were riding in a Chrysler Intrepid when the car veered off the road and rolled over.
“The front passenger was ejected. He survived with minor injuries,” Morrison said. “The rear passenger was ejected, and as a result, the vehicle landed on top of him. He succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at the scene.”
The 23-year-old victim was from the Drumheller area. The driver was treated by paramedics for minor injuries.
Morrison says, despite all the warnings out there, some people just don’t listen.
“It’s very frustrating, to be honest, and it kind of makes me sick to my stomach, that people continue to think they can get behind the wheel after having several drinks,” he said.
“Countless innocent lives are lost every year as a result, still, even though statistics are shown, reminders are out there, there’s tons of education. There are lots of groups that provide education, lots of groups that encourage people to take another driver or a designated driver. There are groups that will drive you home.”
Police arrested 25-year-old Jacob Stahl and charged him with several counts, including impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
Morrison adds, this serves as a sad reminder to Alberta drivers this long weekend.
“If you’re choosing to have a drink, please don’t step behind the wheel. Have someone else drive. Make sure you’ve got someone that can drive for you if you’re going to sit down and have some drinks. Or, take a taxi home,” he said.
Stahl is scheduled to appear in court on August 24.
