Year-round classes get underway, but is there a benefit?

Backpack-toting children will start to dot the landscape in Calgary Wednesday.

It’s the first day of classes for the 2016/17 school year for kids taking year-round programs at Catholic schools, but do such programs really help kids develop better?

Jim Brandon from the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary believes these programs are more about choice than helping kids learn better.

However, one group of kids may benefit more than others

“A few studies have shown advantages for child with English as a second language for example,” said Brandon.

Advocates for year-round schooling say the program better suits a child’s learning pattern as their brains never stop developing, including during the summer months.
