Calgary soccer players watching Olympic team closely

The Olympic Summer Games haven’t officially started yet and fans are already paying close attention to the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team.

Fans here say they have high hopes for our ladies on the pitch.

660 News caught up with soccer players here in the city about the big appeal.

“Watching the Canadian National Team has always been the ladies we look up to and then you reach a similar age and you still look up to them,” explained Becky Awanicki who planys for for DK United.

She credits players like Christine Sinclair for helping to build the sport.

DK United Coach Jacquie Hertlein says her team has high hopes for a good Olympic finish this year, especially after a two-nil win Wednesday over Australia.

“You know I’m always excited in the beginning, but I’ve haven’t been as excited for a game since the last Olympics.”

The Canadian Women’s Team has already made history scoring the fastest goal ever in the Olympics.
