Man in custody after taking Calgary Transit shuttle bus for joy ride

By

There are lots of unanswered questions after a Calgary Transit bus was taken for a joy ride Sunday morning.

Some may be wondering if the man who stole the bus, who is now in police custody, always dreamed of being a bus driver, or if he just got impatient waiting for the bus to leave the stop.

Det. Andy Nguyen says police got a call from transit officials just after 10 a.m.

“Basically, (they were) reporting that a Calgary Transit bus had been stolen at Shawville Gate S.W.,” he said.

He adds, police tracked the bus by tapping into the vehicle’s GPS unit, and called in a HAWCS helicopter as well.

It didn’t take long to locate the shuttle.

Officers on the ground managed to stop the bus about 15 minutes later, at Sun Valley Blvd and Sun Harbour Rd in the southeast.

No injuries were reported in the incident, and no one other than the unlicensed driver, who is now facing charges, was on board.

Calgary Transit is also investigating, wanting to know where the real driver was when the incident took place.
