Strong winds keep crews busy in Calgary and area

Strong winds caused some damage in Calgary and areas outside the city on Monday evening.

Fire crews responding to calls of downed trees, including one report from Lake Bonavista.

Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk tells 660 NEWS, the wind may also be to blame for power outages in parts of Willow Park, which left close to 3000 people in the dark.

“Shortly before 11 o’clock in the Willow Park area, there was actually a power line down…not sure if it was due to the wind or something else but power was out to quite a few homes in that area and ENMAX is currently on scene addressing that.”

North of the city, callers to our traffic desk said a single vehicle rollover on the QE II north of Carstairs was likely due to strong cross winds which blew over a pickup pulling a travel trailer.

One caller saying there were lots of vehicles with trailers pulled over due to blown out awnings and windows and said to avoid travel on the QE II between Calgary and Red Deer if you have a trailer until the wind dies down.

There have also been reports of downed trees, damaging winds, downed power lines and power outages in the Sundre area northwest of the city.
