Renovations begin on Calgary’s historic city hall

Crews are now getting started on giving old City Hall a $34-million facelift.

The renovations are needed to restore the sandstone exterior, which has started to crumble over the past couple years.

Jilian Henderson is the Executive Assistant of Facility Management for the city.

She tells’ City News the process will take about four years, thanks to its complexity.

“Anytime you’re doing a rehabilitation of a historic building, there’s actually lots of additional factors to consider. Some of the methods that were used back in 1911 when this building was done don’t exist today, so we have to do a little more research,” Henderson said.

Henderson says it’s the last original city hall in any major city in Canada outside of Toronto, making it an historical site.

As such, it is being restored as closely as possible to its original form.

The windows and roof will also be fixed up.
