Use common sense: RCMP share message as long weekend comes to an end

Use common sense, and drive to arrive alive.

That’s the message Alberta RCMP are sharing with drivers this long weekend, especially as highway traffic is expected to be busier than normal as those who were taking advantage of the last long weekend of summer head back to their homes.

Mounties will be out in full force, trying to ensure drivers are following rules and staying safe, while issuing tickets to those who aren’t.

Cpl. Hal Turnbull said there are a few things officers want people to do when behind the wheel.

“We just ask people to use common sense,” Turnbull said. “Keep two hands on the wheel; keep your attention on the road, avoid accidents, avoid speeding, and you’ll get to wherever you’re going.”

He added RCMP will be ticketing anyone caught driving impaired, speeding or driving distracted.

“It’s so tempting to get distracted by things like the cellphone, road maps, magazines, books, guide books, even personal grooming, like combing one’s hair, applying make-up while driving,” Turnbull said. “It’s just common sense that driving requires the driver’s utmost attention and caution, especially on holiday roads when there’s an increased volume of traffic.”
