Aggressive deer warning in Okotoks

A warning to those walking to school in Okotoks – be aware of aggressive deer.
Town officials say they’ve been noticing the issue as of late – due to a large population within their town borders.
“There’s been a couple incidents that we’re aware of where somebody’s been chased, especially if they have a dog with them, either on-leash or off-leash. The deer may see the dog as a threat and want to protect their fawns,” says Parks Manager Christa Michailuk.
Residents are being asked to give the animals a wide berth and to report any incidents.
They are also making sure children are aware of the dangers.
“We’ve done some increased messaging for students on how to traverse safely through town with the presence of urban deer. We want children to be aware that deer can be aggressive and to not take the chance of walking too closely to them,” continues Michailuk. “If they do experience an aggressive incident with a deer, to report it immediately to their teacher or to their parent, some authority that can report it in to Fish and Wildlife.”
Michailuk adds that if kids are out on the street when they encounter a deer, and have a phone on them, to call 911.
The areas where the deer roam have varied – but there have been some concentrations along the larger parks and river valley corridor.
Some tips to avoid incidents with deer include always having your dog on a leash, back away slowly if you approach one, and if possible cross the street or find another route around.
Never run away from a deer and never turn your back.
If you do spot an aggressive deer, report it to Fish and Wildlife.
