Eating disorder support group expands to Calgary

Finding the right treatment for bulimia and anorexia is becoming more challenging, but the Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta is hoping to make it a little easier.
The organization is expanding its services to Calgary to connect people to experts and those who are also suffering from the illness.
“It’s certainly not something that only affects adolescent girls,” executive director Sue Huff said. “We’ll see boys and men with eating disorders, and even senior citizens and young children as young as eight or even younger than that. So it is something that is growing in prevalence and frequency.”
Professionals have been facilitating the groups in Edmonton since 2014 and in Red Deer since last year.
Programming in Calgary will start this October and Huff said it’s key for people to meet with others living with the disorder.
“Often people feel like no one understands them, there’s a lot of secrecy, a lot of shame, a lot of stigma attached,” she said. “So first of all, just being in room with people who truly understand what you’re going through and don’t judge you, is an enormous benefit.”
The organization is hosting its official launch on Friday, September 16th at the Kahanoff Centre in the southeast.
