City kicks off 2016 Leaf and Pumpkin Composting Program

Fall has just begun, but the city is already preparing Calgarians to clean up.
The annual Leaf and Pumpkin Composting Program kicks off Saturday and goes until November 6th.
Waste & Recycling Services Superintendent of the city Darcy Cairns says they collect over two million kilograms of leaves every year.
“The program is largely weather dependant. Whenever we get a large frost and the leaves start to fall that’s when we tend to get busier. Then of course after Halloween when everybody is done with their pumpkins, we see a large influx of pumpkins at all the depots.”
Cairns adds this program ensures that these natural products don’t end up in the land fill and it’s turned into something useful like compost.
The city prefers people put their leaves into paper bags as they can break down and leave no waste behind but they will also accept plastic bags as well.
