Stamps player gunned down outside Macleod Trail nightclub

A Calgary Stampeder is dead after a shooting at a bar on Macleod Trail.

The Stamps confirmed Mylan Hicks’ “life was taken in act of violence early on Sunday morning.”

Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Calgary Police Service was called to the Marquee Beer Market in the 4600 block of Macleod Tr. S.W.

Officers found a 23-year-old victim who was shot, and paramedics rushed him to hospital in critical condition but he died a short time later.

“We’ve had some excellent witnesses complimented by some great work by patrol officers,” said Insp. Don Coleman. “And those two things alone, put us in an advanced state of investigation in the early morning hours that we’re hoping we’ll be able to resolve it relatively quickly.”

Police say there was a large group of people associated with the Stampeders at the bar Saturday night and the victim was among a few who got into a fight with another group just before the club closed.

The fight escalated outside and officers say multiple rounds were fired.

Three men were arrested nearby. Investigators say one of them is known to police.

Coleman says whoever fired the bullets in the parking lot had total disregard for public safety and more people could have been hurt.

He described what it’s like to deal with the same violent offenders:

“It’s very difficult. We have investigators that will spend the majority of their careers dealing with the same people,” said Coleman.

Police want to speak with more witnesses to the shooting:
