New elementary schools announced for Calgary

Alberta Finance Minister Joe Ceci continues his tour aimed at selling the Notley government’s new budget.

During a stop in Calgary on Tuesday, Ceci announced $500 million will go towards building new schools in Alberta and renovating several existing ones.

The announcement includes three new elementary schools for the Calgary Board of Education in Cranston, Evergreen and Coventry Hills and one in Auburn Bay for the Calgary Catholic School District.

“These new retrofitted, refitted and rebuilt schools will be good for local communities, good for students and good for the province,” Ceci said. “These projects are another step our government is taking to make life better for Albertans.”

A portion of the funding will go towards renovating and upgrading several schools, including Forest Lawn High School.

The southeast Calgary school will receive new spaces for welding, carpentry, cosmetology and automotive students.

“New schools and major modernizations of aging facilities help us continue to offer quality learning opportunities for our students closer to where they live,” CBE Chair Joy Bowen-Eyre said.

Ceci says for almost all of the projects, construction will likely begin in 2018 after design is complete and schools are projected to begin opening in 2021.
