Drugs a factor after three carjackings in one day

Three violent carjackings on Saturday have the Calgary Police Service concerned about safety in the city.
Police say the common factor in all three are violence and drug use.
The first call came at around 5 a.m. when the driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup was threatened at gunpoint near Country Hills Boulevard and Edgemont Boulevard N.W.
The suspects sped off with the vehicle, driving erratically and even approaching oncoming traffic at times, eventually leading to a high speed chase with police.
A police vehicle was rammed head on before authorities were able to stop and arrest the pair.
The second call came in at noon, when a man was seen acting strangely at 37th Street near Bow Trail S.W.  After trashing a nearby gas station, the man hopped into a woman’s vehicle who was stopped at a light, allegedly assaulter her and forced her to drive a short distance before he was arrested.
EMS had to chemically restrain the suspect before sending him to hospital.
The third call was made at around 2:30 p.m. near Sunridge Mall, where an elderly couple were walking toward their vehicle when they were approached by a suspect.
A struggle ensued and the woman was ran over by the vehicle. She was transported to hospital with serious injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.
HAWCS was able to located the vehicle a short time later.
Four people were arrested in the carjackings, which aren’t believed to be related.
Sgt. Rob Anderson says methamphetamine and fentanyl are believed to be factors in all three cases.
Three people suffered minor injuries.
