RCMP: weather a factor in two Alberta fatal collisions

ALBERTA (660 NEWS) — Slick highway conditions and the weather are believed to be the cause of two separate fatal crashes.
One person died after a head-on crash on Highway 2A just south of Carstairs, on Wednesday afternoon. RCMP said a large grain truck collided with a pick-up truck shortly after 1:00 p.m. Cpl. Laurel Scott says it appears the large truck lost control and entered the southbound lanes hitting the truck.
“We believe the very poor road conditions are a factor in this collision. I’m aware that there was fog in the area and sheer ice on some of the roads for a period of time today,” Scott said.
EMS say the driver of the pick-up was in critical condition when they arrived and passed away before they could rush him to hospital. The elderly driver of the grain truck was taken to Foothills Hospital in stable condition.
Another collision near Rocky Mountain House claimed the lives of a woman and a child. The 35-year-old woman and a 4-year-old boy died after a car they were traveling in hit a truck headed southbound on Hwy. 756. The two men in the truck suffered minor injuries.
RCMP said the road was slippery at the time because of freezing rain at the time of the crash. While mounties are not releasing the identities of the woman and boy, they have stated that both victims are both from the O’Chiese First Nation.
