Calgarian remembers friend slain in Nova Scotia mass shooting

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Condolences are pouring in from around Canada after a mass shooting in Nova Scotia on the weekend killed at least 19 people.

Among the victims was Lisa McCully, an elementary school teacher and mother of two, who is being fondly remembered as a loving and generous person.

“She was funny, she was adventurous, very spirited and very talented,” said lifelong friend Jocelyn Smith.

Smith knew McCully since they were children and would still keep in touch over the years.

“She has done so much for so many other people,” she said.

“I was looking back at our messages on Facebook and there were so many times where she reached out just to encourage me with parenting or life in general. And she was always so giving in her spirit. She learned from life and she was willing to share that knowledge and wisdom.”

Inside the classroom, she was highly regarded by colleagues and students at Debert Elementary School.

“NSTU hearts are broken along with those of her colleagues and students at Debert Elementary, as well as her family and friends who knew her not only as a passionate teacher but as a shining love in their lives,” read a statement from the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.

“She’s won an award for teaching as well. She taught out west in B.C and has made her way across the country and landed in Nova Scotia over the past few years. So this year she was teaching grades three and four,” Smith said.

Then outside the classroom, her generosity continued.“She saw the need for women up north, in Nunavut I believe, going without essential women things like underwear and sanitary napkins. So, she did a Facebook drive to help out,” Smith added.

“She was always looking for ways to help and improve the world around her.”
